Do You Think You Are Ready to Sell Your Beaded Jewelry?

This explains step need to think about before selling your beaded jewlery to the public!

Ok! Now that you made some bead brattets, necklaces and earrings and people comment on how wonderful they look are you sure you are ready to sell them? Do not get me wrong it is gratifying to have that validation; this is not our green light to start selling. Yes, I know this may sound mean but hear me out.

The truth is often as soon as a beginning jewelry maker learns the basics techniques and makes jewelry that resembles designs seen in the marketplace; someone is going to pay this person a compliment. While the compliment is well intended fans are sincere in their admiration, their praise does not mean we are ready to sell our work.

This is not discourage you in any way but to help you succeed. That is why I want to make sure you are really ready to sell even if that means waiting a year or two more. Beaders often jump into selling far too soon like me in matter of months knowing it took hours like 120 hours to one barrette. It took at least 3 days to do one a necklace. What happens if sell them on Auction site and the person wants fours of these. You need to tell that person it may take weeks before you have all four of them done. Most people are not willing to wait that long to get there items at auctions sites online or retail places.

On the logistical side they have not properly worked out the real pricing so you can make a profit, the packaging, display, and other key details. Many people do not even have a business license when they start selling. But this is not the side of the business I am worried about since these are easy to learn.

Then most important question to ask yourself is the quality of your work is good enough yet? Is it well made? Are the techniques correctly incorporated? Are the closures and any attached beads or charms secure? Do your necklaces hang nicely? Are they to heavy? Do they hang slanted? Are your pieces comfortable to wear or do that snag on clothing? I have seen all jewelry either at show or in a store that is below par. Even though it is hard to compare your work to that of others in the marketplace, you should avoid doing so.

Then you ask yourself how do you make an honest assessment of your jewelry? Inspect your jewelry and check to see if the techniques you have used in each piece measure up. For example, what does a perfect simple wire loop or perfect wire wrap look like? Check to see if your crimps are correct: such as if they are still messy, you will need to practice more. Are your finishing touches on each piece professional looking? Have you used claps and other findings that suit the overall piece? Most important is your jewelry attractive? Would you buy the piece yourself at the price you are asking for it?

Make sure you have all the techniques you use down pat. If your designs need improvement, take as many classes as possible to the design inspirations and to soak up tips and techniques. Buy or borrow several books on any technique you are trying to prefect. The more you practice the better off the piece will be and customers will buy.

Eventually you will progress to the stage where you never again have to ask yourself if your work is well made. Instead your concerns will be pricing, promotions, etc. and the last thing you will worry about is quality. Much that being sold out there in the beading industry is mediocre at best so there is market for quality beading pieces. By waiting until your jewelry is precisely made and unique looking, you will avoid blending in with the rest and instead stand out as the jewelry professional you are striving to be!
